This is the skin of a fin whale that is decomposing on Alcatraz Island.
Two Fin Whales washed up on Alcatraz in December. Due to no large predators on the island, these whales are decomposing without large portions being eaten and one of them is still mostly intact. kind of fascinating.
Alcatraz Island is normally a loud place with lots of bird activity. This was an unusually quiet day with herons nesting in Cardons and Oyster Catchers protecting nests. So in honor of the day I focused more on the dead.
well, maybe not all dead....
